Igreja da Misericórdia

Church of Mercy

The foundation of Misericórdia de Braga was due to the archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa, important figure of the XVI century of the history of Braga. Between 1505-1532 he introduced ecclesiastical, architectural and cultural alterations in the city.

Initially, the Irmandade da Misericórdia de Braga (Brotherhood of the House of Mercy) exercised its activity with the authorization of the archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa, in the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy), also known as Capela de Jesus (Chapel of Jesus), attached to the Sé Primaz.

In 1558, the archbishop D. Frei Baltasar Limpo (1550-1558) granted the first canonical licence for construction of the church. He also granted authorization for divine services to be celebrated on the altars of the church and ensured indulgences to those who helped in the construction.

This construction it was concluded in 1565 under jurisdiction of the archbishop D. Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires (1558-1582).

In the centre of the main façade, in Italian Renaissance style, it can be observed, above the window, a circular cartouche made of granite which indicates the date on which it was completed: 1562.

In this façade, it is possible to identify four ionic columns, two on each side of the arch of the entrance door. Above the arch of this door we find the shield of the King of Portugal, placed there in 1770, the year when he was acclaimed protector of the Brotherhood.

In 1723, were placed, between the two columns, the statues of Santa Isabel (Saint Isabel), queen of Portugal, and of São Luís (Saint Louis), king of France, both recognized for their service, dedication and, help to the poor.
