Palácio do Raio
Raio's Palace
The Palácio do Raio (Raio's Palace), also known as Casa do Mexicano (Mexican House), has more than 250 years. It was built between 1752-1754 by João Duarte Faria e Silva (1705-1767). He had a trading house located in the Porta do Souto, where he made his fortune.

João Duarte Faria, in order to consolidate his status, he proceeded to the purchase of one building, ordering the work of the palace to the architect André Soares (1720-1769). The Palácio do Raio became one of the most important buildings of architecture in Braga, in the Johannine baroque style.
The building remained in the possession of his heirs until 1853. In this year, the palace it was sold to Miguel José Raio, who immortalized his name in the palace. This proprietary made several requalification works and introduced some stylistic alterations.

Miguel José Raio, last private owner of the Palácio do Raio (Raios Palace), died suddenly on August 14th of 1875 and, after his death, the edifice it was delivered to Banco do Minho (Bank of Minho) for payment of debts.
On November 1st of 1884, the palace it was sold to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Braga (Braga's Holy House of Mercy), becoming part of the Hospital de São Marcos (St. Marcus Hospital).

The architectural and artistic values of this building, it is demonstrated in the staircase and façade, considered Public Interest Properties in 1956.
In December 1974, the Palácio do Raio (Raio's Palace) and the Hospital de S. Marcos (St. Marcus Hospital), began to be administered by the State. It was officially returned to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Braga (Braga's Holy House of Mercy) on December 28th of 2012.
